Fond Farewell

This week the Department says goodbye to Dr. Jacinth Tan who just completed a one-year locum position with the IWK Pediatric Anesthesia Team. We wish her great success as she returns to the UK.


We bid a very fond farewell to Dr. Marshall Ellis who is leaving at the end of June to return to Prince Edward Island. Marshall joined us as a staff anesthesiologist in 2022 after having completed his five years of residency with us. We thank him for his contributions over the years and extend best wishes on his future career!

EDIA Faculty Development Resource

Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine is launching new educational modules for faculty and educators to understand the influence of racism, prejudice and implicit bias on the teaching and practice of medicine and to build confidence in creating psychologically safe learning environments.


Registration is now open and is free. Access to course materials, comprising six Modules, each accredited for 2.5 hours, is provided through BrightSpace using your NetID or Banner number. Once you enroll in the course you will receive the Brightspace website link to begin. If you have any questions or require assistance, please contact facdev@dal.ca.

Your application must include an up-to-date curriculum vitae and an email or cover letter explaining your interest and why you are a strong candidate for the position.


The candidate must be a Fellow of the RCPSC in good standing; compliant with the Maintenance of Certification program; been certified and licensed for a minimum of five years; willing to participate fully in the duties of an examiner, which include: creating four multiple choice questions and one oral scenario per exam cycle, editing oral scenarios, participating in the applied oral examinations, and abiding by the code of conduct for examiners.

QI: Scotia Drug Tray Standardization May 22

On Wednesday May 22, Scotia Surgery's Anesthesia drug trays will be updated to the same standardized layout as the HI/VG's"General" drug tray.


Items currently found in Scotia Surgery's drug tray that are not stocked in the "general" tray, will be immediately available in the drug cupboard as needed.

With recent focus on improving operating room efficiency, we wanted to take the opportunity to remind staff of the delay codes available within Innovian.


Documentation of delays allows for monitoring of common causes of delays and highlights potential areas for system improvement.

Schedule Guidelines

The Department has developed a guideline document for C/AFP members (CZ, pediatric and W&O) regarding work schedules.


It replaces former, outdated policies. The document includes sections related to staff work responsibilities, creating and managing schedules (e.g., leave requests, shift swaps, etc.) and requesting changes to work schedules (e.g., changing your FTE, requesting leaves of absence, etc.).

Time to Schedule your Annual Review

As spring approaches that means it is annual review time again.


Each faculty member with a Continuing Appointment will have an annual career review meeting to review your chosen career path.


The annual review includes a discussion and evaluation of your clinical, academic (research and/or education) and administrative activities over the preceding year. This year, you will meet with either Dr. Janice Chisholm (CZ), Dr. André Bernard (CZ), Dr. Narendra Vakharia (IWK W&O) or Dr. Scott Drysdale (IWK Peds) starting at the end of March.

Gairdner Early Career Investigator Competition (Apply by Aug 15)

Up to five investigators working in the fields of this year’s awards will be chosen to give 10 minute talks during one of the three major symposia of Gairdner Week, to connect with the 2024 laureates and to attend the 2024 Awards Gala on October 24, 2024 (travel and hotel provided). The talks will be broadcast live and recorded for YouTube distribution globally.


All faculty and professionals at the Assistant Professor or equivalent rank can submit their CV, research summary and a short video for the opportunity to present their research.


Submissions are due August 15.

Canada Gairdner Momentum Award (Apply by July 15)

Awarded to mid-career researchers working in Canada who in their last six active years have produced exceptional scientific research contributions with continued potential for impact on human health.


Mid-Career Researchers (those 10-15 active years past their first independent appointment) can apply to the Canada Gairdner Momentum Award. With a $50 000 CAD prize and recognition alongside international leaders, the Momentum Award highlights the exceptional research being done by mid-career researchers in Canada.


Submissions are due July 15.


Both self-nominations and third party nominations (by colleagues, institutions, research leaders, etc.) are accepted for this award.

Awake Tracheal Intubation Survey

This collaborative project is co-led by Dr. Adam Law. It seeks to explore how many ATIs you do in a year, your preferred technique, issues you might encounter during ATI, and whether you feel continuing education offerings on the technique would be a good idea.
